The spherical coordinate system is used, in order to allow large-scale simulations. The equations and mathematical development of the model are shown in detail, together with the boundary and initial conditions, and the sequence of equations' solution. The model is applied to the South Atlantic Ocean, for estimating typical seasonal circulations, and the results are summarized in maps of currents at surface and 1000m depth, and in transport values of the Brazil Current between 30ºS and 40ºS. %8 Mar. %N 9 %@secondarydate 20020612 %T On the use of the Galerkin method for 3D numerical modelling of the general circulation: the South Atlantic experiment %@electronicmailaddress joharari@usp.br %@electronicmailaddress emanuel@cptec.inpe.br %K ocean general circulation model, Galerkin method, spectral method. %@secondarytype PRE PI %@archivingpolicy denypublisher denyfinaldraft %@usergroup administrator %@usergroup jefferson %@group %@group LMO-INPE-MCT-BR %@secondarykey INPE-9088-PRE/4764 %F 10045 %@issn 0271-2091 %2 sid.inpe.br/iris@1905/2005/08.03.21.54.52 %@affiliation Instituto Oceanograco da USP %@affiliation Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) %B International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids %@versiontype publisher %P 881-893 %4 sid.inpe.br/iris@1905/2005/08.03.21.54 %@documentstage not transferred %D 2002 %V 38 %@doi 10.1002/fld.248 %A Harari, Joseph, %A Giarolla, Emanuel, %@dissemination WEBSCI; PORTALCAPES; AGU; COMPENDEX. %@area MET
